As mentioned here, support for 1024 bit signed certificates is being phased out by certificate and browser authorities at the end of 2013. This means that device manufacturers and online services providers are having to update to maintain capabilities.
Dell have published information detailing the minimum firmware revisions for their Dell Sonicwall firewalls which will meet the certificate requirements. If your Sonicwall firewall was installed with the current SonicOS after October 2011 or has had its firmware brought up to date since November 2011, it should support 2048 bit certificates. If it’s more than two years since it was updated, it almost certainly won’t support 2048 bit certificates.
You can find out the required firmware revision for your particular firewall and how to check your current revision on this Dell support page If you need any help doing this, get in touch with IS People.
Dell state that “Existing security services on Dell SonicWALL firewalls that use 1024-bit certificates will continue to block previously-known threats” but add that “the lack of updates may expose the protected network to new threats and exploits. In addition, you will NOT be able to activate and renew security services.”
So your firewall should continue to work. However, if the firmware is old enough to need updating to support 2048 bit certificates, it will be missing a lot of interim security updates as well and so should really be brought up to date anyway.
Dell has announced that it intends to buy the security appliance specialist, Sonicwall.
Sonicwall has a well-regarded product range, good revenues, a healthy reseller programme, and a portfolio of patents related to computer security – all of which makes them an attractive prospect for any purchaser.
What makes Sonicwall particularly attractive to Dell is how neatly they fit into the Secureworks product line Dell have been putting together. With KACE covering end device security and AppAssure covering application security, Sonicwall will complete the picture by covering network and datacenter security.
All Sonicwall employees will be retained and products will be available initially both through Sonicwall’s reseller programme and Dell’s PartnerDirect channel. Hopefully this will ensure little disruption to the delivery of Sonicwall products.

The Register’s analysis
Our customer website was launched earlier this week. This new site allows our retained clients secure access to individual portals. Here they can view their server availability statistics, real time monitoring, retainer balances and time sheet information. We have also introduced a facility for offsite file storage and retrieval in addition to other specific areas.
This free facility was designed and developed in house to provide up to date information for the benefit of our client base.
In the near future our website will be providing a portal. This will provide additional screens with specific information and status tracking. Currently the portal is available for internal use while we are evaluating options for new features to enable wider deployment – watch this space…..
The new website is launched. The objective for the first phase of the launch was put together a site that provides an introduction and an overview of the services we provide. The site is easy to navigate using a fresh clean design and layout with out being over reliant on pages of text and jargon. There are plans for further development phases with updates and user portal facilities in the future.
